WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE PLANNING YOUR MIST OR FOG SYSTEM
While there are many important factors you MUST know before investing in any misting or fogging equipment for your home or business, the single most important is that there cannot be a real outdoor cooling system without including a pump & motor. Such a unit is required in order to convert plain water into mist at 1000 psi (pounds of pressure per square inch), to allow the high pressure mist to flash evaporate immediately upon contact with intensely hot air. This effect creates “conditioned air” that can cool a given area by up to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. “You get cool not wet”, is an absolute fact. Without a pump, plain water is just being transferred, so you will get wet.
Currently, there are two (2) basic operating types of high pressure misting or fogging pumps available from several manufacturers. The best and most efficient on the market today, is a pulley driven 1000 psi pump in 1-3 GPM sizes to fit your particular needs. The second & less expensive type is a direct drive 1000 psi pump in sizes from .25 – 2.1 GPM. The pluses & minuses for each type are outlined below.
Pulley driven pumps have been in use for approximately twenty (20) years. FOGCO SYSTEMS INC., the major developer in this field, has been manufacturing pulley driven pumps since the 1980’s. These pumps have several advantages over direct drive pumps. They come in all sizes and operate at 1000 psi with a motor and heavy duty triplex plunger pump, but employ a pulley & belt to drive the system. They use less electricity, and the pulleys slow the pump speed by about 50% with very low RPM’S. Part of the reason for the increased cost is the use of an oversized pump to achieve the slower speed necessary for the required volume & pressure needed, which equates to a more efficient unit with less operating cost, quieter operation, longer life that requires less maintenance. Our pumps can operate for periods of up to eight or sixteen hours continuously, and our commercial grade pump can run 24/7. These pumps are all much noticeably quieter while running, with noise levels for a 1GPM pump starting at about 40dBs. We offer protection warranties on our FOGCO pulley driven pumps for up to five (5) years. No other manufacturer can duplicate that. Other features found only on every FOGCO pulley driven pump, include a water safety switch that will prevent pump & motor damage if run without a water source, plus an hour meter to track pump time usage for scheduled service. A FOGCO pulley driven pump & motor unit is worth the difference and definitely your best buy.
The most common pumps in general use today are direct drive units that operate with a motor, pump & spindle, at high RPM’s. They mostly put out the necessary 1000 psi, & are reasonably efficient, but they labor extensively to do the job over long periods of time. Most are rated for only up to eight (8) hours of continuous use, & come with a one (1) year warranty from their individual manufacturer. Their main drawback however, lies in the fact that during operation they are very noisy, & prone to move around, even when they are enclosed in a box. Their decibel ratings start at about 85dBs for .05GPM pumps and get much louder as the pumps increase in size & capacity. These noise levels play a big part in determining where the pump can be located for permanent installation. Direct drive pumps have been in existence since misting began, and are still used primarily because they are considerably lower in price than the much superior alternative, pulley driven pumps. FOGCO manufactures pulley driven pumps in all sizes that operate at 1000 psi. These are “High Performance” heavy duty triplex plunger pumps that, unlike other manufactures, come with a two (2) year warranty. A 1GPM FOGCO direct drive pump has a decibel rating starting at about 64 dBs, making it much quieter then other manufacturers equally rated pumps. Another feature found only on every FOGCO direct drive pump, is a water safety switch that will prevent pump & motor damage if run without a water source. If a direct drive pump is your choice, FOGCO is still the best answer.
The pump & motor unit necessary to operate a misting or fogging system is the single most important part of any system. Choose carefully. If you pick wrong, you will have a pump that doesn’t perform up to your expectations, and your overall misting or fogging system will be a disappointment. FOGCO is number one because they make the best! If you don’t get a FOGCO pump, you won’t get the best.
